Chiang Mai University maintains 1,238 air conditioners, reducing carbon emissions by more than 428 tons per year. Chiang Mai University is adhering to the 13th Education Development Plan (2023–2027).

One of the key strategies is to become a “Carbon Neutral University,” or a university that is carbon neutral.
This means achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions through continuous energy reduction and efficiency improvement.

Air Conditioning Maintenance Project (Air Conditioner Cleaning) at Chiang Mai University by the Energy Research and Development Institute, Nakhon Ping, CMU (ERDI-CMU)

Why does air conditioner cleaning help reduce carbon?

• When the air conditioner is clean → uses less electricity → reduces greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation.
• This falls under Scope 2: Indirect greenhouse gas emissions from electricity consumption.

Results achieved by Chiang Mai University in 2024:
• Maintenance of over 1,238 air conditioners
• Reduction of electricity consumption by 716,432 kWh/year
• Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 428.85 tons of CO₂/year
• Equivalent to planting over 38,900 trees
This is a small but powerful example demonstrating that a major strategic plan can begin with a simple, everyday action like “air conditioner cleaning,” and truly become part of the drive towards becoming a Carbon Neutral University.
